Walking in the Light

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

John 8:12

Edited written sermon

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” This sermon looks at what it means to walk in that light day by day — not only in what we believe, but in how we live.

Light that is given, not earned

The light Jesus speaks of is not something we produce. It is given. We receive it as we come to Him, and we keep walking in it as we keep following Him. That is why the Christian life begins with what God has done and not with what we have achieved.

Walking, not only seeing

To follow is to move. The promise is made to the one who follows, and the light is promised for the road, not for the armchair. As we obey what we already know from God’s Word, more of the way becomes clear.

Light for others

What we receive is not for ourselves alone. A ministry that walks in the light becomes a light to its city — in the home, at work, and among neighbours. This is what it means to be the light for nations.

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
